Description
Zyban (generic name bupropion) is a form of antidepressant medication. It is usually used as a pharmaceutical treatment for cases of major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. Zyban has also been used in some cases to help smokers overcome the effects of withdrawal. This is possibly tied to the theory that smoking acts as an antidepressant.
Side Effects
Zyban has been known to cause allergic reactions in some people. Symptoms of this include hives, swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat, and possibly difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include changes in mood and behavior, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, irritability, hostility, aggressive tendencies, restlessness, and mild bouts of depression. In addition, some patients have developed migraines, nausea, dizziness, changes in appetite, and loss of libido as side effects.
Warnings
Zyban should be taken only as prescribed by your doctor. In the event you were given no instructions, consult your prescription label. Zyban can be taken with or without food. Do not chew or break the tablet, as this would cause too much of the drug to be released into the body. Your doctor may recommend nicotine patches or gum while taking Zyban, if it was recommended as part of a smoking cessation treatment regimen. Using nicotine products with Zyban may increase your blood pressure, however.
Do not take Zyban if you have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, and selegiline within the last 14 days. Also, it is not advisable to take Zyban if you have experienced epilepsy, an eating disorder, another drug that contains bupropion, or are using alcohol or sedative medications. Avoid Zyban if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, bipolar disorder, or are using steroids.
Zyban should only be taken as prescribed. Larger doses or prolonged use may cause harmful side effects. Zyban may increase blood pressure if used with nicotine products. If the extended-release tablet is used, do not attempt to chew or break the tablet to prevent too much of the drug from being released.
In the event that a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered. If the time for the next dose is close, ignore the missed dose and stick to the regular schedule. Do not double-up on the medication to make up for a missed dose. In the event of an overdose, seek medical attention. Symptoms of an overdose may include hallucinations, fainting, and muscle stiffness.
