Description
Ultram (generic name tramadol) is pain relief medication that has narcotic properties. Ultram is generally used to treat pain ranging from moderate to severe in intensity. Ultram is generally taken based on a schedule provided by a medical professional. There is also an extended-release formula used to treat conditions where pain relief is required round-the-clock, and chronic pain conditions.
Side Effects
Emergency helps is needed if a patient encounters an allergic reaction to Ultram. Possible signs include hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of areas such as the lips, tongue, and throat. Other side effects associated with Ultram use include seizures, blistering or peeling of the skin, weak pulse, and shallow breathing.
Warnings
Ultram should not be taken if you have ever been addicted to drugs or alcohol, or if you are intoxicated. Alcohol, pain medication, sedatives, antidepressants, psychoactive medications, and street drugs have also been known to interact with Ultram. Risk of side effects and seizures may be increased if you have a history of drug or alcohol addiction, epilepsy, a history or head injury, any metabolic disorder, or are taking antidepressants.
Take Ultram only as prescribed. Larger doses or prolonged use can result in harmful side effects. Do not take more than 300 milligrams of Ultram within a 24-hour period. This medication should be taken with a full glass of water, but can be taken with or without food. The tablet should not be crushed and is for oral use only. Powder from a crushed tablet should not be inhaled or injectred into the body, as this may cause life-threatening side effects.
In the event of a missed dose, take the medication as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip and stick to the regular schedule. Do not take extra medication to make up the forgotten dose. Overdoses should be handled with emergency medical attention. Signs of overdose may include drowsiness, fainting, and shallow breathing.
