Description
Rozerem (generic name ramelteon) is a sedative drug, sometimes also known as a hypnotic. It has an effect on the chemicals in the brain that regulate sleep. As a treatment for insomnia, Rozerem is used to correct imbalances in the brain's chemical makeup, causing relaxation to help people fall and stay asleep.
Side Effects
Rozerem may cause patients to experience a severe allergic reaction. It is advisable to stop taking the drug and inform your doctor as soon as possible if this occurs. Other side effects may include worsening sleep problems, mild depression, decreased inhibitions, aggression, and hallucinations.
Warnings
Rozerem can make patients fall asleep, so this drug should not be taken during normal waking hours. Activities such as driving, eating, or making phone calls are highly discouraged, as some patients have reported having no memory of performing these tasks. In such an event, it is best to stop taking Rozerem and inform your doctor immediately. People with kidney or liver disease, as well as various respiratory ailments, should not take Rozerem. This medication should also not be taken while pregnant or planning to get pregnant.
Rozerem should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take this medication in larger amounts or for a period longer than advised. Never take this medication during waking hours to avoid drowsiness during normal activities. Patients may experience withdrawal symptoms after taking the drug for several days. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Rozerem is taken only as needed, so you may not have a dosing schedule. However, this medication should be taken only if you have a full 7 to 8 hours for sleep before engaging in activity. Do not take extra doses. Contact the local emergency room if you experience an overdose.
