Description
Propecia (generic name finasteride) is medication designed to prevent the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is known to be involved in the development of a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The drug is used as a treatment for BPH in men with enlarged prostates.
Side Effects
Propecia has been known to cause allergic reactions in some patients, with notable symptoms including swelling of he face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficult breathing. Breast lumps, pain, and changes to the breast area have also been noted as side effects. Other side effects include pain in the testicles, possible impotence, dizziness, abnormal ejaculation, and skin rashes.
Warnings
Prior to taking this medication, you should inform your doctor if you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to Propecia, or to the similar drug dutasteride (Avodart). Also, avoid taking this medication if you have liver disease (including abnormal liver enzyme tests), prostrate cancer, bladder muscle disorder, the inability to urinate, or stricture of the urethra. This medication should not be taken by women or children.
This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed. Using Propecia for longer than recommended, or in larger doses than prescribed, may cause harmful side effects. If instructions are not provided by the doctor, there are directions on the prescription label. This should be taken with a full glass of water, but may be taken with or without food. Blood testing on a regular basis is advised to ensure that the drug is working properly.
In the event of a missed dose, the drug should be taken as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and wait until the prescribed time. Do not take extra medication in the event of a missed dose, to avoid side effects. In the event of a possible overdose, contact the local emergency room.
